On randomness

Here’s some random snippets of my recent work: product/food photography, handmade paper goods and some personal projects. There’s even a guest appearance from my adorable cat, Lulu! I love it when the line between work/play becomes blurred.

I adore randomness! I’ve realised that unpredictability and change are what makes work (and life) so enjoyable! It bothers me a tiny bit when a computer tries to predict what music (or books) I’ll like next. And if we ‘google’ something, it seems that for days afterwards, similar-themed advertisements pop-up on our screens. It all gets a bit boring! Computer-driven predictions are ‘smart’ — but they aren’t as interesting as real people in real life. It reminds me of why it’s so refreshing (and humbling) to travel to new places, experience new things and talk to different people…

Exploring and collecting

Life is full of treasure! I love hunting for colour & pattern, amazing light, textures & details, little moments & memories. ‘It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.’ Henry David Thoreau

Recent work – Spring in Canberra

Jo Bakas - Canberra in Spring images 2012Jo Bakas - Canberra in Spring images 2012

I’m so lucky to live in a city with distinct seasons. Spring in Canberra is an absolute delight: wisteria is overflowing, the days are longer and there are splashes of colour in every park and garden. These images are from a recent project to ‘creatively document Floriade and spring in Canberra’ for Australian Capital Tourism (through Swell Design Group). I wanted to show how it feels to live in Canberra at this time of year and the sense of excitement and renewal. No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.” ~ Proverb

Meandering through Victoria

Jo Bakas - Meander through Victorian TownsJo Bakas - Meander through Victorian Towns © Sabka DesignIl Fornaio at St Kilda by Jo BakasUsually the drive from Melbourne to Canberra is painfully dull and arduous—just another freeway! But this year we decided to take the one-day scenic route via Mount Macedon, Taradale, Castlemaine, Bendigo, Shepparton and Benalla (plus a schnitzel detour to Albury). The ‘Panela’ image is from Il Fornaio, a cafe in St Kilda. The ‘Commit No Nuisance’ is from an alley in Melbourne’s Chinatown.

Delicate peony

The Amnesia Rose

I’ve discovered a beautifully-dark, melancholy rose called the ‘Amnesia’. I love this look—it feels like you could fall away into the dark corners of the image. I’ve just seen Tim Burton’s new film ‘Dark Shadows’, which explains my taste for the melancholy at present. This image was adjusted using Alien Skin’s Exposure 4 plug-in for photoshop (bleach bypass).

Colours of autumn

I’m in awe of Canberra’s beautiful autumn colours…  A few weeks ago I collected leaves from my garden (and surrounding streets), photographed each one separately on a lightbox and grouped them by colour. Isn’t nature incredible?!

I’m obsessed with beautiful things—but I’m not talking designer handbags or luxury brands. The hardest thing is taking the time to pause and really see what’s around us. Easier said than done in a busy world with too many distractions…

Ice skating in the city

The beautiful and talented Laura Exarhos, ice skating in Garema Place on Wednesday night. These images were taken at ISO 3200, hand-held without flash. I have zero experience with this type of photography and the noise from shooting at high ISO wasn’t ideal. A flash would be a handy thing to have!

It’s hard to believe Laura has only been skating for one year!

Nostalgia for Greece · Νοσταλγία για Ελλάδα

In 2009 I was lucky enough to visit Greece—a country with immense history and a spectacular, diverse landscape. It upsets me greatly when I hear about the financial and political problems in Greece… I can’t say I loved downtown Athens but overall the country left a huge impression on me. My memories are of the warm and friendly people, delicious simple food, magnificent stone, and scenery that took my breath away…Jo Bakas - Nostalgia for Greece

Spring Blossoms in Winter?

I discovered a blossoming tree in Bedford Street, Deakin this morning… and it’s only just July! A lovely start to the week and a reminder that Spring is not too far away. Click on each image to zoom in. It’s a shame that I can’t upload the originals—the detail at 100% is incredible.Jo Bakas Canberra - Blossoms in Winter

I find it tricky to get the depth of field just right when shooting at wide apertures—I frequently have massive failures (probably from trying too hard). These turned-out ok but there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Thanks for visiting!
